Just as your pulse is checked during a routine physical, free cash flow is used as an indicator of a company's health. It equals the cash brought in from operations minus the money needed to pay the bills. Think about leftover money in your checking account after you pay this month's bills.
Investors and analysts see this leftover money as a gauge of a company's ability to perform. It is available for transactions such as handing out dividends and working on new products.
Some argue free cash flow is wrongly overshadowed by the emphasis often placed on earnings. Earnings numbers can be manipulated and don't always tell the whole story -- and earnings don't mean much if there's nothing left over after a company pays its expenses. Even if you bring in a six-figure salary, but no money left after paying the bills, are you in great financial shape?
You don't have to be Einstein to figure out free cash flow. To calculate the number, subtract the company's expenditures and dividends from its operating cash flow.
If the free cash flow is written in red ink, it doesn't necessarily signal curtains. This is common for young companies looking to grow. It also could be a result of heavy investments, which in the long run could be worth a standing ovation.

01 Communique Provides an Update on its Patent Re-examination & Litigation with Citrix Systems Inc.
Comtex
TORONTO, Jun 23, 2008 (Canada NewsWire via COMTEX) ----01 Communique Laboratory Inc. (TSX:ONE) today announced that it has received the First Office Action, in respect of the Re-examination of its Patent, from the United States Patent and Trademark Office ("USPTO"). The First Office Action is non-final, providing a summary of the USPTO's findings based on their initial review of information provided solely by Citrix. The Inter Partes Re-examination process does not allow for input from the patent holder prior to the issuance of the First Office Action. Now that it has been issued we are entitled to, and will, respond with our submission.
"We were encouraged by the fact that, without input from us, the USPTO did not accept many of the arguments presented by Citrix. We look forward to the opportunity of responding and believe the USPTO will support our views once they have had a chance to review our submission," said Andrew Cheung, President and CEO of 01 Communique. "We have been aware of the references in the Office Action as they were identified to us by Citrix during the discovery process of our court case. We believe the arguments supporting our position and refuting the arguments submitted by Citrix are strong. We have always been, and remain, confident in the validity of our patent and the merits of our case against Citrix."
We filed a Notice of Concurrent Proceedings with the USPTO, which notifies them our court proceedings were stayed (deferred) pending completion of this re-examination. It is the policy of the USPTO to expedite re-examinations when court proceedings are pending.
