AMD, 3Com Gains Lead Tech-sector Action

SAN FRANCISCO -- Tech stocks were mixed in early trading Thursday, with the performances of Advanced Micro Devices Inc. and 3Com Corp. highlighting the day's action. AMD shares surged $1.24, or more than 23%, to $6.58 after the chipmaker and Intel Corp. settled their long-running legal disputes. 3Com climbed $1.79 a share, or almost 32%, to $7.49 a day after Hewlett-Packard Co. said it would acquire the networking gear-maker for $2.7 billion. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index fell 2.7 points to 2,163.
