McDonald's No Longer Subject of Boycott by American Family Association

Fast food chain McDonald’s (MCD) will no longer be the subject of a boycott by the American Family Association.

In May, the AFA called for a boycott of McDonald’s because it joined the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce.  But the group, according to a press release, lifted that boycott after McDonald’s said it won’t renew its membership with the NGLCC when it expires in December -- and that its vice president, Richard Ellis, has resigned from the NGLCC board.

In a press release issued Thursday the NGLCC said "McDonald’s USA has been a good partner with the Chamber. There has been no discussion between the NGLCC and McDonalds regarding continuing membership, nor has the NGLCC been notified of any move not to renew our work together." The group went on to note that its mandate isn't to pursue "political agendas."

McDonald's in an e-mail said "diversity and inclusion are integral components of our brand and our heritage. We continue to have strong employee networks throughout our company and will continue to align our brand with individuals and organizations that share our belief in supporting our people and the communities we serve."

In the case of Ellis, the company said he made a personal decision to step down from the board after he accepted a new job with McDonald's Restaurants in Canada.

"At McDonald's, we continue to value and respect everyone," said the statement.

NGLCC is a nonprofit organization created to expand economic opportunities for the LGBT business community. AFA is nonprofit family advocacy group.
