World Series Has Biggest Yearly Ratings Gain Ever

CHICAGO -- The Fox network's coverage of the 2009 World Series generated the largest single-year ratings increase in the entire televised history of the Fall Classic, dating back to 1947, Fox Sports said Thursday. The Series, a six-game victory for the New York Yankees over the Philadelphia Phillies, was seen by an average audience of 19.4 million viewers. Its average rating of 11.7 and its 19 share of the TV audience was 39% better than that the 8.2 rating and 14 share tallied by the 2008 Series, which saw the Phillies triumph over the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. The Yankees-Phillies matchup was the highest-rated World Series since 2004, when the Boston Red Sox swept the St. Louis Cardinals. Fox is owned by News Corp., which also owns MarketWatch, the publisher of this report.
