Ofcom Recommends Relaxing Media Ownership Rules
By Simon Kennedy
MarketWatch Pulse
LONDON -- Ofcom, the U.K.'s communications industry regulator, said Tuesday that it has recommended changes to media ownership rules that would remove some of the restrictions on ownership of local radio stations and other local media. Ofcom said the proposed changes mean that all local commercial radio stations could be owned by one operator in a particular area, alongside the BBC local radio services. In addition, cross-media ownership rules would be relaxed so the only restriction would be on companies that hold a local radio station, local newspapers and a regional channel three television license. Ofcom said it made the recommendations to the government after issuing a consultation paper in July.
