Walt Disney (DIS) announced the promotion of Rich Ross to chairman of its studios division, which includes Touchstone, Miramax and Pixar.
Ross, who had previously led Disney Channels Worldwide, is assuming the new position immediately, the media giant said in a statement late Monday. In addition to leading Disney’s movie studios, Ross is set to run the company’s theatrical and music groups.
Dick Cook surprised the movie industry last month by announcing plans to step down as chairman of Disney’s studio business.
“Rich has an outstanding record of creating high-quality family entertainment that delights audiences around the world,” Disney CEO Robert Iger said in a statement. “With his success in building the Disney brand across many of our businesses, his astute marketing sensibility, his proven ability in working effectively with talent and his skill at navigating complex global markets, I’m confident he’s the perfect leader for our studio group.”
Under Ross, Disney Channel has released a number of blockbusters, including “High School Musical 2.”
