If you throw all the products we buy and the services we use in one basket, then add up the price tag, that's the Gross Domestic Product, which is the primary metric economists use to assess the economic health of a country or region.
The easy part of calculating GDP is the calculation itself: C+I+G+(X-M)=GDP. Got it? No? Well, add Consumption, Investment by companies, Government purchases, and then take the product of eXports (calling it 'E' would lack sexiness) minus iMports ('I' was taken). Viola! GDP.
Still don't get it? Well, knowing the components helps. Consumption is the biggest component, and it's a tally of the cost of all the goods and services we buy. Investment is what companies spend on the real assets they own, plus the value of the inventory that we haven't gobbled up through consumption. Government purchases are what the Feds pay money for (whether it be highways or fighter jets, though big social programs, like welfare, aren't counted). And then we calculate the difference between the goods and services we¿re sending to other countries and the stuff we're bringing in.
Good. That explains it, except there's a catch. Inflation has a habit of distorting the numbers, so economists talk about either Nominal GDP or Real GDP. In fact, Real GDP isn't necessarily "real" for most folks, since it takes any inflation out. Nominal GDP includes the effects of inflation. (There's something called the implicit price deflator which is a calculation using the two, but we'll spare you the details.)
So, now that we know GDP, why do we want to? Well, it's good to compare different markets. And watching the trend shows whether a given economy is growing (good), stagnating (not so good), or shrinking (very not so good). When GDP goes down two quarters in a row, we're officially in a recession.
For the record, GDP is released at the end of each month, with most reporting ¿preliminary¿ data for the previous month. But you won't get final GDP numbers for the fourth quarter of a year until the very end of the first quarter of the next year. After all, it's not an easy number to calculate.

DEQ Systems Corp.: SPA Resort Casino Gets EZ Baccarat
Comtex
LEVIS, QUEBEC, Aug 19, 2008 (Marketwire via COMTEX) ----DEQ Systems Corp. (TSX VENTURE:DEQ) announced today that the SPA Resort Casino, located in Palm Springs, California, has leased two EZ Baccarat(TM) as well as two EZ Trak(TM) display systems. This brings the total number of games in Southern California using DEQ s non-commission baccarat method to 24. DEQ has also signed contracts with other Californian casinos to install EZ Baccarat(TM) and is presently in various stages of obtaining licensing approvals.
Bill Duke, Director of Table Games at SPA Resort Casino stated, "I was impressed by EZ Baccarat s simple methodology. Our players love the quicker pace of the game and we do too. They get to play more hands and we get increased table game revenues without having to add additional tables or dealers. The EZ Trak(TM) system is also well worth our investment. Our players enjoy trying to track down the 40 to 1 Dragon 7(TM) bet using EZ Trak(TM), which also has a positive effect on the tables revenue. It s safe to say that their playing experience is improved thanks to DEQ s products," he concluded.
"We are very happy with the customer reception of EZ Baccarat(TM)," stated Paul Omohundro, DEQ s Vice President of Partner Sales. "The Spa Resort Casino is very popular casino and resort destination in California and their decision to join the EZ Baccarat frenzy in Southern California is exciting for the Spa, their clientele and for DEQ as well. It is important to recognize as well that the Barona and Pechanga casinos have now converted almost 100% of all their regular baccarat tables to EZ Baccarat(TM)."
ABOUT EZ BACCARAT(TM)
EZ Baccarat(TM) makes the commission disappear without changing the nature and spirit of this very successful table game. It only replaces the taking of the 5% commission on every winning bank hand by "barring" one specific winning bank hand: a three card total of seven called the "Dragon 7(TM)". Players can make an insurance bet, called the "Dragon 7(TM)" bet that pays 40 to 1 when the three card winning bank hand occurs. The EZ Baccarat(TM) methodology and the Dragon 7(TM) bet were created by Robin Powell and TJ Tejeda of the Talisman Group in Las Vegas and are protected within the scope of DEQ s patent portfolio.
