Some mutual funds want you to pay for the privilege of them (or your investment adviser) taking your money to invest. It's called a load, and it works like a cover charge to get into a nightclub. Luckily, there are such things as no-load funds. As the name implies, shares of these funds are sold without a fee paid to a broker or investment advisor.
The entire amount you invest in no-load funds goes to work for your returns. On the other hand, with load funds, right off the bat you're charged commission (not to mention other fees incurred over the life of the investment). Let's say, for example, you invest $25,000 into a load fund that charges a 5% commission. This costs you $1,250 off the top, bringing your actual investment down to only $23,750.
The often-cited horse race analogy argues against investing in load funds. Here's the logic behind it: Would you place a bet on a horse that had to start a race 200 yards behind the others? Well, maybe you would if you got a tip from a sketchy, trench coat-clad man in a dark alley. However, under most circumstances, it's not smart to put your money on that handicapped horse.
But some argue that at times that man in the trench coat (aka your broker) knows more about the horses than you do, and has a better shot at picking a winner. Also, sometimes these fees are unavoidable because some funds are available only through investment advisers.
Cost-benefit analysis can help determine when a load fund is worth it (in other words, when it will score you a load) and when it is better to "do it yourself" and avoid the fees. Load-fund fees range depending on share class and can cover a variety of costs, such as paper work and fund management.

The latest member of the Siemens ultrasound product family, the ACUSON S2000(TM) ultrasound system, provides excellent gynecologic and fetal imaging for both 2D and 3D/4D acquisition, as well as 3D Dynamic TCE tissue contrast enhancement technology -- an industry exclusive -- for enhanced anatomic border and contrast resolution. In addition, the ACUSON S2000 features a comprehensive set of applications in the arena of volume imaging:
-- Advanced fourSight(TM) technology -- for comprehensive 3D/4D acquisition, data rendering and post-processing functionality on all examinations in 2D and color Doppler. -- 3-Scape(TM) real-time 3D imaging -- real-time capture and display of grayscale and power Doppler volumes using both high-resolution 2D and fourSight 4D transducer technology offering industry-leading 3D/4D acquisition and multi-planar visualization. -- Amnioscopic rendering -- for the most photo-realistic fetal ultrasound images. This advanced surface rendering technique is unique to Siemens. -- Fetal heart STIC imaging -- an automated acquisition of a high-quality fetal heart volume using a sophisticated algorithm that compensates for variability in heart rate. Multi-planar reformatted images are easily obtained for detailed anatomical evaluation. The application features an industry-exclusive, real-time heart rate display and preview mode to improve workflow. In addition, it is fully compatible with syngo(R) Velocity Vector Imaging(TM) technology.
In addition, the ACUSON S2000 features syngo Auto OB measurements that use sophisticated pattern recognition technology in all automatic biometric measurements. Especially developed to enhance the workflow in obstetrics, the software delivers increased measurement accuracy and consistency.
Siemens will also showcase its smallest and the world's first pocket ultrasound system: the ACUSON P10(TM). A 2008 recipient of Medical Design Excellence Awards (MDEA), the ACUSON P10 weighs in at only 1.6 pounds and is small enough to fit in a lab coat pocket. It is intended for use in routine and urgent care settings, particularly in obstetrics, emergency care and cardiology. In labor and delivery, the ACUSON P10 system gives physicians and midwives a quick overview of fetal positioning, amniotic fluid volume, placental location, abnormalities and miscarriage.
"The system is quickly becoming the assessment tool of choice for clinicians around the world," said Klaus Hambuechen, chief executive officer, Ultrasound, Siemens Medical Solutions USA, Inc. "Instead of having to get the patient to the technology, the ACUSON P10 system brings the technology to the patient. This makes additional information available on a patient's condition. In addition, it can save critical minutes, especially when the patient is in distress."
