These gains don't cause pain. A capital gain is the amount of money you pocket by selling one of your investments for more than you paid for it. Technically, capital gains only count for what's called a capital asset, but that's really just anything you own for investment purposes. Stocks and bonds obviously qualify, but your house and household furnishings can also count.
For tax purposes, capital gains are classified as either long-term (held for more than one year) or short-term (held for less than one year) and there are different tax implications for how long you hold onto a capital asset. For most long-term capital gains, you're taxed no more than 15% of the value of the asset. Short-term gains get taxed as regular income, so you pay the rate for the tax bracket you're in.
Capital gains can also be realized or unrealized. When you physically sell an asset like a stock, you've realized the capital gain. When you're holding the stock, and it has a value over its purchase price, but you're not selling it, you've got an unrealized gain, and you won't realize it until you sell.
In a perfect world, we'd all have capital gains. But no one¿s that smart or lucky. When the value of an asset at sale is below what you've paid for it, it's called a capital loss. The good news is that the government lets you count that loss against any gains you've had, lowering the taxes you pay. In fact, many people who sell a stock that has risen far over their purchase price tend to sell some stinkers, too, at the same time for the tax benefit. This is known as a capital-loss offset.

Metalex Ventures Limited - New kimberlite discovered in Angola
Comtex
KELOWNA, BC, May 20, 2008 (Canada NewsWire via COMTEX) ----Metalex Ventures Limited (MTX: TSX-Venture Exchange) is pleased to announce that an additional diatreme has been intersected at its project in Angola. This brings the number of diatremes discovered by the current drill program to three. In addition four diatremes were pitted or augered last year and were confirmed as kimberlite.
This most recent diatreme has been tested with two holes. Both holes penetrated approximately 50 feet of overburden before intersecting crater infill sediments to a depth of approximately 150 feet at which depth diatreme was intersected. The first hole was terminated at 236 feet in the diatreme due to technical drilling difficulties. The second hole was drilled to the planned depth of 603 feet where it ended still in the diatreme. The diatreme is modeled to be 2.6 hectares in size.
In the news release dated March 25, 2008 it was announced that drilling had intersected a five hectare diatreme.
Intersection of a 112 hectare diatreme was announced on February 26, 2008. Two holes were drilled, one to 125 feet and the second to 503 feet. Both holes terminated in the diatreme.
Core from all three diatremes along with alluvial heavy mineral and weathered rock pit samples have now been shipped by air cargo to Canada where they will be analyzed for diamonds and diamond indicator minerals at the C.F. Mineral Research laboratory.
Metalex is pleased with the intersection of yet another kimberlite. Upon receipt by the CF Minerals laboratory the drill core, heavy mineral and pit samples will be analyzed as a matter of priority. Results will be used to guide the continued drilling.
Mr. Chad Ulansky is the Qualified Person responsible for the technical contents of this press release.
