Airline Stocks Up With Southwest Airlines

NEW YORK - Airline stocks climbed early Thursday with Southwest Airlines reporting October traffic growth and fuller planes. At last check, the NYSE Arca Airline Index rose 1% to 24.20 with all of its 13 components climbing higher. The benchmark Dow Jones Industrial Average rose nearly 90 points to 9,892. Shares of US Airways added 1.7% to $2.97, Continental [s; cal] rose 1.6% to $11.72 and Southwest climbed 1.7% to $8.34. Airlines have been issuing their October traffic numbers over the last week with most results showing traffic growth and fuller planes, pointing to a potential future of airfare hikes.
