BOSTON -- Shire plc said early Tuesday that it has applied for European marketing approval of its drug velaglucerase alfa, a treatment for the rare genetic disorder Gaucher disease. The product is also awaiting approval in the U.S. If approved, the drug would compete against Genzyme Corp.'s flagship product Cerezyme. A third company, Israel's Protalix BioTherapeutics is also finishing development on a drug to treat the disorder.
