Report: FDA Accuses P&G of 'False' Labeling on NyQuil and DayQuil

The U.S. Food & Drug Administration warned Proctor & Gamble Co. (PG) of using “false and misleading labeling” on the packaging of its DayQuil and NyQuil products, according to reports.

On Wednesday, the agency reportedly posted a letter on its Web site accusing P&G of violating FDA’s list of approved ingredients for medicines over-the-counter, since the list does not allow Vitamin C to be combined with the other active ingredients in the products, according to Reuters.

The FDA also said the company was misleading customers by describing the Vitamin C in its DayQuil and NyQuil products as an inactive ingredient, the report said.

“Because the vitamin C in these products is an active drug ingredient, it is therefore both false and misleading to state that it is an inactive ingredient in these drug products," the letter, which was directed to P&G President and Chief Executive Bob McDonald, Reuters reported.

The FDA later removed the letter and a spokesperson from the agency told Reuters it was posted in error. P&G issued a statement saying it was working with the FDA to remedy the concern and believes its labeling is within the FDA’s rules.

Shares of P&G rose 0.09% or five cents in Wednesday’s session, closing at $57.31 per share.
