Cigna Quarterly Net Income Rises 92%

LONDON -- Cigna Corp. said that third-quarter net income rose to $329 million, or $1.19 a share, from $171 million, or 62 cents a share a year ago. Revenue declined to $4.5 billion, from $4.9 billion last year. On an adjusted basis, net income totaled $1.13 a share. Analysts had been expecting earnings per share of $1.02. The company continues to expect 2009 adjusted earnings per share in a range of $3.80 to $4.00. "Our third quarter 2009 earnings were solid and reflect our continued focus on ongoing operating effectiveness initiatives," said CEO Edward Hanway.
