Alkermes Begins Trials for ALKS 33
FOXBusiness
Alkermes (ALKS) announced Tuesday it has begun phase 2 clinical trials of ALKS 33, a drug designed to treat alcohol dependence. The drug, which is known as an “opioid modulator” may also be used to treat nervous system disorders.
Alkermes trials will look at the safety and effectiveness of ALKS 33 when given in multiple doses to 440 patients over the course of 12 weeks. Patients will receive the placebo and the drug at random. Patients have been asked to abstain from alcohol use while participating in the trial.
The news of this trial comes after the company’s Monday announcement that that opioid dependence drug Vivitrol will be marketed in 2010 following a positive clinical trial.
