Panel Approves Bill Strengthening Investor Power
By Ronald D. Orol

WASHINGTON -- Shareholders would have an easier way to nominate a minority slate of directors onto corporate boards under controversial legislation approved by a congressional committee Wednesday. The legislation, which was introduced by Reps. Maxine Waters, D-Calif., and Gary Peters, D-Mich., was approved by a vote of 39-30. It would strengthen a proposal already being considered by the Securities and Exchange Commission. The provision was included in a broader investor protection package under consideration by the House Financial Services Committee.
