LONDON -- European shares were mostly weaker in early trading on Wednesday, with losses for metal stocks offsetting gains in the banking sector after BNP Paribas shares surged 8%. The French lender posted a drop in first-quarter profit that nonetheless beat analyst forecasts. Elsewhere, Ahold shares rose 4.7% after the supermarket group posted a rise in first-quarter sales. The German DAX 30 index declined 0.2% to 4,842.02, the U.K. FTSE 100 index slipped 0.2% to 4,330.08, while the French CAC-40 index rose 0.2% to 3,230.83.
