Free Cash Flow

Just as your pulse is checked during a routine physical, free cash flow is used as an indicator of a company's health. It equals the cash brought in from operations minus the money needed to pay the bills. Think about leftover money in your checking account after you pay this month's bills.

Investors and analysts see this leftover money as a gauge of a company's ability to perform. It is available for transactions such as handing out dividends and working on new products.

Some argue free cash flow is wrongly overshadowed by the emphasis often placed on earnings. Earnings numbers can be manipulated and don't always tell the whole story -- and earnings don't mean much if there's nothing left over after a company pays its expenses. Even if you bring in a six-figure salary, but no money left after paying the bills, are you in great financial shape?

You don't have to be Einstein to figure out free cash flow. To calculate the number, subtract the company's expenditures and dividends from its operating cash flow.

If the free cash flow is written in red ink, it doesn't necessarily signal curtains. This is common for young companies looking to grow. It also could be a result of heavy investments, which in the long run could be worth a standing ovation.

Avis Budget Group Forms Alliance With Carbonfund.org

Comtex

PARSIPPANY, NJ, Jul 22, 2008 (MARKET WIRE via COMTEX) ----Avis Budget Group, parent company of Avis Rent A Car and Budget Rent A Car, today announced an alliance with Carbonfund.org, one of the leading international non-profit organizations providing carbon offset solutions to individuals and businesses. This alliance will enable Avis Budget Group to offer its corporate and retail customers a variety of carbon offset options to enable them to minimize the environmental impact of their daily, weekly or monthly vehicle rentals.

"At Avis Budget Group, we are very concerned with how our business affects the environment," said Ronald L. Nelson, chairman and chief executive officer, Avis Budget Group. "Teaming up with Carbonfund.org will help us advance our efforts to reduce the environmental impact of our fleet."

Customers of Avis and Budget will be able to make donations to Carbonfund.org online via avis.com and budget.com to offset the emissions from their rental car use as a separate transaction from their vehicle rental. The donations go towards the ongoing purchase of carbon offset credits, which fund a variety of environmental projects aimed at reducing the emission of greenhouse gases.

The alliance with Carbonfund.org adds to the many environmental initiatives of Avis Budget Group, which is already partnering with its corporate customers to assist them with their individual carbon reduction targets. The Company is also creating a formal environmental management system (EMS), which is being designed to measure and manage environmental aspects of the Company's operations in accordance with International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 14001 guidelines. The EMS will cover air, water and land quality issues, landfill contributions, resource depletion and conservation, solid/liquid waste, odor/noise emissions and other environmental aspects.

"We are very pleased to work with a company such as Avis Budget Group, which is extremely conscious of its environmental impact," said Carbonfund.org Executive Director Eric Carlson. "Together we will be able to make a positive impact on the future of the environment and set a standard for offsetting emissions for rental cars."

Avis Budget Group also offers its customers a variety of vehicle choices for reducing environmental impact. Out of a fleet of more than 375,000 vehicles, 63 percent of the fleet is U.S. Environmental Protection Agency SmartWay Certified and one-fourth of the fleet is rated at 32 miles per gallon or better. The fleet also includes gas/electric hybrid vehicles for rent in compact, full-size and small SUV car classes.

In addition to its fleet and field operations practices, Avis and Budget offer services such as eToll electronic toll collection and where2(R) GPS navigation systems that can help reduce environmental impact from rental car use. Avis Budget Group offers customers eToll services in more cities than any other company, which allows travelers to skip cash payment lines. Studies found that paying tolls electronically reduces hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide emissions and also reduces emissions of nitrogen oxides. where2 GPS navigation systems provide real-time traffic alerts which help drivers avoid getting lost as well as traffic jams and road construction, reducing unnecessary driving time and thus reducing emissions.
