CO2 Emissions, Heating Bills To Fall, EIA Says
By Steve Gelsi
MarketWatch Pulse
NEW YORK -- Projected carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from fossil fuels will fall by 5.9% in 2009 in the U.S., according to estimates released Tuesday by the Energy Information Administration. Coal leads the drop in 2009 CO2 emissions, falling by 10.1%. "Changes in energy consumption in the industrial sector, a result of the weak economy, and changes in electricity generation sources are the primary factors for the decline in CO2 emissions," the EIA said. The projected recovery in the economy contributes to an expected 1.1% increase in CO2 emissions in 2010. EIA projects average household expenditures for space-heating fuels to be $960 this winter, a decrease of $84, or 8%, to reflect lower fuel prices.
