Australian Shares Rise Early, Resources Gain

LOS ANGELES -- Australian shares started the week to the positive, with the S&P/ASX moving 0.9% higher to 4,749.1 in early Monday morning trading. Resource and mining shares were among the leading gainers, with Woodside Petroleum Ltd. up 1.8% despite weaker crude-oil futures prices. BHP Billiton Ltd. added 1%, while rival Rio Tinto Ltd. was 2% higher. However, Alumina Ltd. lost 0.6%.
