Australian Shares Edge Higher In Early Trading

LOS ANGELES -- Australian stocks managed some early gains Thursday, despite a negative close on Wall Street, as resources edged higher on continued commodity gains. The benchmark S&P/ASX 200 was 0.3% higher at 4,753.70, with Woodside Petroleum Ltd. gaining 1.2% and Alumina Ltd. pushing up 0.3%. Gold miner Newcrest Mining Ltd. made a solid advance of 2.7% after gold futures marked a new record overnight.
