WASHINGTON -(Dow Jones)- Portugal's budget plan seems appropriate, with realistic macroeconomic assumptions and goals, a spokeswoman at the International Monetary Fund said Thursday.
Caroline Atkinson, director of external relations at the IMF, told reporters during a regular briefing that the fund's staff hasn't had a chance for detailed discussions with Portuguese authorities regarding the budget passed by Parliament last week. The government hopes to cut the deficit to 8.3% this year, with plans to meet the European Union's demand to bring it below 3% by 2013.
"Its success will depend on those measures being fully implemented, but our first impression is this looks a strong plan," said Atkinson.
