Massachusetts Unemployment Rate Jumps to 5.3% in August
Associated Press
The unemployment rate in Massachusetts rose to 5.3% in August, though it remains well below the national average.
The state's unemployment rate was up from a revised figure of 5% in July.
The national unemployment rate was 6.1% in August, up from 5.7% the previous month.
The Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development said Thursday that the state's labor force declined by 4,100 people in August. But the state also reported it added 1,700 jobs that month, with the leisure and hospitality sector accounting for 800 new jobs.
The jobs number and the unemployment rate sometimes move in opposite directions because they rely on different survey methods.
