WELLINGTON -(Dow Jones)- New Zealand retail sales rose in January from December beating the consensus forecast, official data showed Friday, showing consumption is on the rise after last year's prolonged recession.
Statistics New Zealand said the seasonally adjusted retail sales in January rose 0.8% from December. December's figure was revised to a fall of 0.4%.
The January result was stronger than the 0.5% increase forecast in a Dow Jones Newswires poll of 11 economists.
But core retail sales, which exclude motor-vehicle sales, were up 0.3%, compared with December's revised 2.0% fall, and economists' median forecast of a 0.7% increase.
