Sen. Obama Calls for Second Stimulus Package
FOXBusiness
To address the housing market woes, rising energy and food prices, and eroding consumer confidence, the U.S. needs a second stimulus package, said Barack Obama, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee in an interview with Fox Business Network.
“Consumer confidence is at an all-time low, gas prices are at all-time high and the housing market still hasn’t been stabilized which is putting a lot of pressure on the Fed to juice up the economy at the same time its dealing with inflation," said Obama in an interview with Alexis Glick of FOX Business Network. “Having a serious energy plan and looking at the possible speculation in the oil futures market could have a difference at least in alleviating some of the upward pressure on oil prices.”
According to Obama, there’s a need for another stimulus package and a permanent $1,000 tax cut for individuals and families. He said all of those actions combined could “get the economy back on the right track.”
Obama noted a plan going through Congress to help homeowners who face foreclosures needs to be approved quickly, which he said could aid in restoring confidence in the credit markets and consumer confidence. If he were president, Obama said he would set clear goals for energy but would let the private sector, public and private partnerships and universities meet those goals.
“It's going to be businesses around the country that are taking some of this research and development, implementing and creating millions of green jobs that can fuel this economy for years to come,” said Obama.
Obama reiterated that if he were to become president he would roll back President Bush’s tax cut to the levels it was in the 1990s.
“Rich people were doing pretty good back then,” said Obama. “Ninety-five percent of Americans would see tax cuts under my tax plan. Those, like myself, in the top 5% will see a tax increase.”
During the wide-ranging interview, Obama said in regard to the Supreme Court’s ruling striking down the ban on handguns in Washington, D.C,. that he believes the second amendment is an individual right.
“That right can be limited by sensible, reasonable gun laws,” said Obama. “People do have an individual right and there’s nothing wrong with common sense gun laws.” He pointed to background checks and keeping guns out of the hand of criminals and mentally ill as common sense gun control laws. “We can both uphold tradition with respect to firearms and prevent the senseless killings we see on the streets of so many American cities,” he said.
As for President Bush’s announcement earlier Wednesday that he’s lifting some sanctions in North Korea, Obama said he hasn’t had a chance to review North Korea’s declaration but, "assuming that North Korea has fully disclosed its plutonium operations, its enriched uranium operations, as well as some of the issues surrounding proliferation…and its following through on the additional steps already outlined in the agreement, then I think it’s a positive development.”
