Berkshire Hathaway (BERK.A), the holding company managed by billionaire financier Warren Buffett, is betting big on giant retailer Wal-Mart (WMT), according to regulatory papers filed Monday.
Berkshire Hathaway nearly doubled its stake in Wal-Mart to 37.8 million shares as of September 30 from 19.9 million shares on June 30, a Securities and Exchange Commission filing revealed. The added stake is worth nearly $1 billion.
Berkshire Hathaway, whose purchases and sales of stock are often viewed as harbingers of future stock market trends, also listed new holdings in Nestle AG, the world’s biggest food maker, and ExxonMobil (XOM), the biggest oil company. Berkshire said it added 3.4 million American depositary receipts of Nestle valued at $144.7 million, and about 1.28 million ExxonMobil shares valued at $87.6 million.
