By John Letzing
MarketWatch Pulse
SAN FRANCISCO -- Japan's merchandise trade balance rose sharply to 807.1 billion yen ($9.1 billion) in October, up from 75.2 billion yen in the same month last year, according to reported Ministry of Finance data Wednesday, as the fall in imports outpaced those for exports. The surplus topped the 460.9 billion yen estimate of economists polled by Dow Jones Newswires and the Nikkei. Exports fell 23.2% compared to the same period last year, reports said, a 13th straight monthly decline and smaller than the 30.7% fall seen in September and beating a 26.5% forecast reported by Reuters. Imports fell 35.6%, compared to a 36.9% drop in September.
