Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee on state concerns over health-care reform.

[0:00:36] ... one of the things that was killing states was the cost of Medicaid and Medicare. This three basic things that a state has to do educate medicate incarcerate those with a three fifths Medicaid. Or education. Medicaid. And prisons. For example in Arkansas that's not 1% of the general revenue budget those three things everything else everything else the state government -- 9%. -- with Medicaid makes a huge portion of the State's budget and it doesn't every year it gets more and more expensive because of medical ...
[0:02:06] ... but that option to get out get out of what the entire Medicaid system. If you do what are you gonna do with 700 for example in the small state like Arkansas. -- 700 plus thousand people on Medicaid. With a three to one state federal match so that means that if you were to get out the it would bankrupt you've been quicker. It's a game they're playing it's a total -- so now sounds like unfunded mandate it is an unfunded mandate when you tell the states you're gonna have to raise the eligibility level to a new. You can either do it our our way or the highway and don't forget you're doing this at a time when more people are out of work so the Medicaid eligibility. Is going. Through the roof right now. When the unemployment rate is slow you have more people working less people qualifying for Medicaid now you have more people than ever qualify for Medicare. Governor one of the things that we love about you with you more compassion. How can cover people who are poor and need the conference I mean isn't that what our great nation is about it's a different thing between covering people who are poor. And making the federal government dictate what that coverage looks like the question is why should you go and tax the people who already have good health insurance. For example whether they're union members are people with the so called Cadillac plans. That's absurd. You're penalizing them for having the ...
[0:04:44] ... to find huge cuts somewhere and the penalty for not complying with Medicaid is to lose your entire Medicaid program. That that that's that's insanity. So how do you insure the uninsured well one of the things you do -- create ...
