During an interview with the FOX Business Network’s Deirdre Bolton, Takei questioned Thiel’s use of the word “pride” when describing himself as being gay.

“I thought it was very peculiar that the word pride was there with his being gay. I mean I’m gay and I’m proud and I’m a Democrat. He as a Republican, is supporting that Republican platform, where it thoroughly dehumanizes LGBT people, of which he claims to be one in that,” he said.

Trump pledged during the RNC to support the LBGT community. “As your president, I will do everything in my power to protect our LGBTQ citizens from the violence and oppression of the hateful foreign ideology,” he said during his keynote address on Thursday.

Takei recalled a luncheon he had with the real estate mogul where they discussed marriage equality.

“Well I had lunch with Donald Trump to advocate for marriage equality and this was before New York got marriage equality. And he did tell me that he has a lot of LGBT friends, he’s gone to weddings of LGBT friends and he supports LGBT people but he is for traditional marriage, so he has been consistent there,” Takei said.
