Ding Dong: It’s Your Fellow Wal-Mart Shopper With Your Delivery

Consumers who order products online from mega-retailer Wal-Mart (WMT) may soon have them delivered by fellow local customers under a new crowdsourcing delivery plan, according to a Reuters report.

Peer-to-peer delivery would allow the Arkansas-based company to better compete with online giant (AMZN) with speedy delivery. The plan would allow customers to rent out space in their vehicles to Wal-Mart to deliver goods to other customers

Reuters reports Wal-Mart is in the “early planning stages,” as there are various barriers to overcome as far as regulations, laws and privacy issues.

As of right now, Wal-Mart ships online orders directly to consumers at 25 of its locations and will be expanding that number to 50 in the year to come. According to Reuters, this could spread to thousands of locations in the near future.

A spokesperson for Wal-Mart told that the delivery method is still very much “just an idea.”

“I wouldn’t read too much into the idea yet, because no work has been done on the program. It was mentioned casually at our Global eCommerce media day,” Ashley Hardie, senior manager of Media Relations says.

Currently the retail giant uses FedEx Corp. to ship its online orders, and is also testing a new service called Wal-Mart to go in five cities that ensures same-day delivery.
