2010 Week 5 – Both sides bring in reinforcements as the Vikings invade New Jersey.

The 1-2 Minnesota Vikings are coming off their bye week and heading into the New Meadowlands to take on the 3-1 New York Jets.  The big headlines are around reinforcements on both teams.  The Vikings re-acquired receiver Randy Moss from the Patriots last week giving Brett Favre a downfield threat to make up for the loss off Sidney Rice.  The Jets have receiver Santonio Holmes returning from a four game suspension and will likely have corner Darelle Revis active after missing 2 ½ games due to a hamstring pull and linebacker Calvin Pace back from a foot injury.

Both teams have strong running games behind the Viking’s Adrian Peterson and the Jets' Shonn Greene and a rejuvenated LaDanian Tomlinson.  Each will be tested as both teams have a rush defense in the top five of the league.  As if that wasn’t enough, Brett Favre is reportedly suffering elbow tendonitis in his throwing elbow and Mark Sanchez is going strong in his second year with eight touchdowns and no interceptions after four weeks.

FOX Business has evaluated the win/loss and stock market statistics over the past 20 seasons of Monday night NFL games and come up with a Monday Night Markets (MNM) rank for each team based on their record and the prior week’s market activity.  Let’s take a look at what the markets have to say.

The Dow Industrials ended last week up 1.63% and the S&P 500 was up as well closing out the week with a loss of 1.65% putting both indexes with wins for five of the last six weeks. Stocks shrugged off the disappointing September jobs number that showed a loss of 95,000 non-farm jobs and were buoyed by a better than expected initial jobless claims number of 445,000.

Over the past 20 years, the Vikings have played 28 Monday night games and based on our calculations have a Monday night rank of .462 when the Dow closes the prior week up and .429 when the S&P 500 is up giving them a MNM rank for this week of .446.

During the same 20 year period, the Jets have played 19 Monday night games and have a rank of .429 when the Dow is up and .400 when the S&P 500 is up giving them an MNM rank this week of .415.

In a tight game, Monday Night Markets picks the Minnesota Vikings to win on the road and go to 2-2.

2010 Monday Night Markets picks: 3-2

Week 5 FBN Staff Picks: Vikings vs. Jets

Jets Jets Jets. Randy moss scores once but the Jets defense is for real and that will be the difference. Low scoring game with the Jets announcing their presence as a Super Bowl threat with authority!

Season: 3-2

Brett Favre has waited a long time to toss bombs to Randy Moss as the two had some epic prime-time battles when Favre was in Green Bay and Moss in his first tour with the Vikes. The two will recapture some magic, especially if Jets shutdown cornerback Darrelle Revis is a scratch. The timely texting scandal will not bother Favre nearly as much as the New York defense. Mark Sanchez gets yet another weapon in now-eligible WR Santonio Holmes which will help fuel the Jets offense to a fourth straight victory.
