President Barack Obama spoke from the Rose Garden this afternoon and blamed the Republicans for not helping small businesses.
While ignoring his policies, that business owners say are too restrictive for them to do business, Mr. Obama called on Republicans to stop blocking the small business bill-- which the party calls misguided.
This was just one of many deflections the president made this weekend in response to the economy.
He sat down yesterday with NBC and made some interesting comments.
Here's one:
"We are making progress. We are steadily moving forward. A year ago today, we were still losing jobs, we're now gaining them."
Well, now for the fact check.
To be clear, I am not calling the president a liar - he's right to a point - but leaving out big chunks of information.
The private sector did in fact add 71,000 jobs in July - though economists were looking for 100,000 more. But in an economy of our magnitude we're always adding jobs-- that's not the headline Mr. president.
When you take into consideration the fact the economy lost 202,000 jobs -- the net result – (and by the way this is how every reputable economist talks about this number) we lost 131,000 jobs in July thanks to major layoffs in local governments and census workers.
And in June - the number of jobs lost was revised to 221,000.
For august - economists are expecting a loss of 99,000 jobs. You can make the case fewer people are losing their jobs - but to boast job creation... not so much.
Now President Obama also made a point on the GDP numbers out on Friday saying, "the economy was still contracting, it's now expanding. It's not happening as fast as people would like, but it's moving in the right direction."
Here’s the context: to be sure, the GDO was negative when he took office, but the president seems to be proud of 1.6% growth, which is down from 3.7% last quarter and 4.9% the quarter before that.
Mr. President that is nothing to write home about.
We need to fix this economy . We need an administration willing to go against politics to fix this economy. Spending our taxpayer dollars hasn't done enough to bring unemployment down. It’s time for plan "B" or whatever letter we're on now.
