eBooks on the Cheap

Search among more than 8,000 books from independent authors and small publishing houses for ebooks priced as low as $5 apiece. (Added bonus: there are about 1,000 titles that are free, from novels to short stories to non-fiction.)

At Smashwords.com, publishers have the option to distribute the latest reading material among 9 different ebook formats, such as iPhone and Sony’s (SNE) Reader. Authors who offer their work directly online decide the price, and take 85% of the net proceeds in return. Publishing on Smashwords.com is free of charge, as is registration for readers interested in new authors. Go to smashwords.com/signup.

Shot from Canon

Lots of new photography toys coming soon from Canon (CAJ).

For the point-and-shoot people, there’s four new – very colorful – models in Canon’s PowerShot line. The new SX210 IS will come in black, purple and gold, and can shoot HD video. That ships in late March. Three others – the PowerShot SD3500 IS, SD1400 IS, and SD1300 IS – will ship later this month. The SD3500 IS has an LCD touch screen and comes in black, silver and pink. See more at http://www.usa.canon.com/powershot.

And for the professional photographer in you, check out the new Canon Rebel T2i Digital SLR. This 18-megapixel camera shoots full HD video and will cost you about twice as much as a PowerShot. Read up on the details at canon.com and see it in stores in early March.

For Kicks

Stacey Bendet, creator of alice + olivia, first saw her personality-packed designs on the racks at Barneys in New York City in 2002. Now she’s teaming up with another American classic, Keds footwear.

The alice + olivia-take on the sneaker is perfect for warmer weather, with black, silver, pale pink, or safari green slip-ons adorned with sequins. Bendet’s Keds Champion will launch at Neiman Marcus and at neimanmarcus.com this spring, carrying an expected retail price of $88 per pair. Later, you’ll be able to find them at alice + olivia boutiques and aliceandolivia.com.

Apple Extras

zoomMediaPlus has a new way for moving content from one electronic device to another. The application-enabled add-on plugs into an iPhone or an iPod Touch, allowing you to share content from your netbook, camera, Mac, or PC without having to sync individual devices. You can download the zoomIt app for free via the Apple App Store under Utilities. The ZoomIt accessory will be available in April with a retail price of $59.95. Pre-order yours at zoomitonline, where you can get a $10 discount for a limited time.

Apple (AAPL) also has new photo editing software in the form of Aperture 3. It has more than 200 new features, from Brush, for professional editing, to Faces and Places, to help you organize your photos. The new program, available through your local Apple Store and apple.com, has a retail price of $199. Those of you who already use Aperture can upgrade to this new version for $99. Or, you can try it out for a month by visiting apple.com.

Virtual Gift Card

Target’s (TGT) new Mobile GiftCard uses a PIN instead of plastic. All you need is a mobile phone that can access the Internet. Information from multiple GiftCards can be stored in a secure account at Target.com’s mobile site, and your local Target retailer will scan this mobile barcode when you want to use this account for a purchase. Visit target.com for more information.
