The War on Drugs: Because Prohibition Worked So Well...
In my syndicated column this week, I discuss what happens when government tries to protect us from ourselves.
Forty years ago, the United States locked up fewer than 200 of every 100,000 Americans. Then President Nixon declared war on drugs. Now we lock up more of our people than any other country -- more even than the authoritarian regimes in Russia and China... continue reading »

America, the Law-crazed
In my syndicated column this week, I discuss how politicians' eagerness to legislate creates an "injustice system":
When there is a big crime, legislators quickly demand that felons be given longer jail sentences and "mandatory minimums" for repeat offenses. This wins votes but kills judicial discretion and crushes unlucky people... continue reading »

The War on Weed
The federal government continues its war on business, often in the name of the War on Drugs.
Lynnette Shaw owned Marin Alliance for Medical Marijuana in Fairfax, California. For 15 years she sold pot to customers who had clearance from a doctor.
Medical Marijuana is legal in California, as it is in 16 other states. That didn't matter to the feds, who shut her down in December.

End America's Drug War -- A Lesson from Portugal
We've all heard the arguments against drug legalization: It would be anarchy! Americans would ingest dangerous substances wildly! They would randomly commit violence! Society as we know it would cease to exist!
The people of Portugal heard these claims 10 years ago, when the country decriminalized all drugs.
People predicted the country would spiral into chaos. So did that happen?
No.
Independent studies found that, after the drug law passed, the number of Portuguese who regularly do drugs stayed about the same. Problematic and youth drug use went down... continue reading »

Feds Announce Obama Flip-Flop
Yesterday, dozens of California medical marijuana dispensaries got letters like this one from Obama's Department of Justice that warned they must shut down "even if such activities are permitted under state law."
This afternoon, four DOJ attorneys held a press conference and said this:

President Herman Cain?
Of all the Republican Presidential Candidates, Gallup says Herman Cain has the highest "positive intensity score." That means voters who know him - like him.
That's a good thing, and I like Cain because he has an impressive record in the business world. He turned around the failing Godfather's Pizza. Unlike most politicians, he understands business, and the damage regulation does... continue reading »

Save Black America
America has a race problem. True, we elected a black president, but that doesn't change the fact that one in nine young black men ... is in jail. More than 10 percent. It doesn't change the fact that many Blacks don't trust the police, and sometimes won't help the police. ... continue reading »

Tonight's Show: Stossel vs Coulter (FBN @ 9pm ET)
Around the New Year, many people resolve to cut back on “vices”. What’s nice about New Year’s resolutions is that the choice to cut back is ours. We get to decide if drinking or smoking is right, or moral, or not. That’s freedom. But when government makes resolutions for us … we don’t have a choice. That's why I call tonight's show "Forced Resolutions" (FBN @ 9pm ET). It’s important to keep in mind that government is force... continue reading »
