If it Moves, Regulate It
Let's say you wanted to get from New York to DC this evening. You could take the government-supported train system - which would cost you $153 or more - or you could take a bus, which gets no government subsidies, for... $19... continue reading »

Joe Biden Railroad
It's amazing how modern politics resembles scenes of Ayn Rand's best-seller Atlas Shrugged. Like the one in which a high-ranking government official pumps millions of dollars into a failing railroad company. The grateful railroad CEO rewards the government official by renovating his hometown train station and naming it after the government official. The renovation costs $5,700,000 more than expected. Then comes the ribbon cutting ceremony... continue reading »

End Ethanol Now
The time to end the government powered ethanol subsidy has come… and gone… multiple times. It’s an expensive waste of money, and a GAO report confirms that if it is left unchanged, the
… annual cost to the Treasury in forgone revenues could grow from $5.4 billion in 2010 to $6.75 billion in 2015... continue reading »

Rail: A Thing of the Past
What’s faster, greener and more convenient than high-speed rail? Self-driving cars, as I report in this week’s show. I thought self-driving cars were a science fiction fantasy, but on my show Saturday, transportation expert Randal O’Toole tells me that self-driving cars are already a reality. Google engineers recently drove seven test cars, in traffic, 1,000 miles without any human intervention... continue reading »

TSA: We’re the Best
Last week, the TSA announced it will not allow any more airports to choose to use private screeners instead of the TSA. “I do not see any clear or substantial advantage to do so at this time,” the TSA administrator said. No advantage?... continue reading »

Free Market Vs. Government Rail
Tonight, President Obama will propose a five year budget freeze. Yippee. Except that it won’t affect Medicare. Or Social Security. Or the military. And current levels of spending are the highest ever. I don’t want to freeze spending. The feds plan to spend 3.8 trillion dollars this year. That’s nuts. I want to cut! So on my show tonight, I’ll list some of the departments and programs that government should eliminate. Just one example is Amtrak, which has lost money every year since it was created in 1971. Let the free market work. It’s worked for freight rail... continue reading »

Punch-Drunk Bully II
For my next FBN show, Thursday, we’ll debate whether the new Republican congress critters will really cut the size of government. The “old” Republicans clearly don’t have a good track record when it comes to spending. Holman Jenkin’s recent column reminds me that establishment Republicans are dangerous on many fronts... continue reading »

Let Markets Civilize Airport Security
The government says it may fine one young man $11,000 for leaving the airport without “permission.” He didn’t want to be scanned by the invasive new scanners, and he didn’t want the TSA touching his “junk.” When they’re not touching your junk, the TSA makes children cry. Now Bill O’Reilly demands that I provide my “solution,” or endorse his. I admit, I don’t know the best solution... continue reading »

Taxi? $800,000!
Today’s NY Times reports on stupid Greek business rules:
To break into the business, an aspiring pharmacist generally has to buy a license from a retiring one. That often costs upward of $400,000. “It is an absurd system.”... continue reading »

Are Union Thugs Bankrupting America?
This Friday at 10pm, Fox News will broadcast my heated argument with NYC Transit Worker’s Union President John Samuelsen. It’s part of my special, “The Battle for the Future.” Samuelsen, of course, argues that its ridiculous for me to say that “union thugs are bankrupting America.” We also have a confrontational exchange about sick days. I said: “One fourth of your workers took more than 15 sick days. In the private sector, they wouldn’t last long doing that.” He responded, “About 25% of our work force are women... continue reading »
