National Affairs
I'm always pleased and surprised when I agree with a New York Times column by big-government-conservative David Brooks. Today he writes about the new journal, National Affairs. America’s leaders are in the same position that General Motors’s executives were in a decade or two ago. The nation has made a series of lavishly unaffordable promises. The legacy costs are piling up. By the end of 2019, the nation’s debt will soar to 82 percent of G.D.P... continue reading »

Obama to Congress?
I wish President Obama would say this to Congress tonight: “Members of Congress, I ask you to address our fiscal emergency. We liberals meant well when we created Medicare, but, unfortunately, this was the height of fiscal irresponsibility. This Ponzi scheme worked for a while. But then more people had the nerve to live longer. Now there is no way that there will be enough workers to pay the Medicare benefits that we politicians have promised. Medicare is a scam. We politicians should be ashamed of what we promised... continue reading »

The Long Run Matters
John Maynard Keynes, in many respects the founding father of stimulus economics, once said, "In the long run, we are all dead." That seems to be the attitude of the economists that the Washington Post speaks to... continue reading »

Obama, Hoover and Roosevelt
A new study published by the Institute of Economic Affairs and endorsed by Nobel laureate James Buchanan suggests that Barack Obama is making the same mistakes made by policymakers during the Great Depression. Here's how a story in Britain's Daily Telegraph puts it: His polic... continue reading »

Obama's Speech to Schoolkids
Obama will speak to schoolkids today. Pundits have cried foul about Obama's using the event to 'indoctrinate' our youth, but his prepared remarks released by the White House seem innocuous enough. There are even good parts. He will tell students to take responsibility for their education: No one’s born being good at things, you become good at things through hard work. You’re not a varsity athlete the first time you play a new sport... continue reading »

The Airport For Nobody
The infamous "Bridge To Nowhere" eventually got so much attention that it was canceled. But the "Airport For Nobody" still happened. It's official title is the "John Murtha Airport", named after the congressman -- fitting, because only a politician spending someone else’s money would ever build something like it... continue reading »

Your Tax Dollars at Work
The job of a Connecticut state representative must be grueling work, especially as the politicians have spent the state into financial crisis. The state borrowed a billion dollars and raised taxes to balance its budget. An AP photographer captured Democratic Reps. Barbara Lambert and John Hennessy hard at work. As Republican Rep. Larry Cafero spoke about the budget, Reps... continue reading »

Larry Cafero spoke about the budget, Reps. Lambert and Hennessy played solitaire on their computers. Another watched baseball. While it’s annoying that these “legislators” play games on our dime, what’s more galling is that they have no shame about being caught... continue reading »
