Class Warfare
In his speech yesterday, Obama brought up income inequality to justify higher taxes on the rich.
In the last decade, the average income of the bottom 90% of all working Americans actually declined. The top 1% saw their income rise by an average of more than a quarter of a million dollars each. And that’s who needs to pay less taxes? ... continue reading »

$38 Billion in Cuts? Not Even
Today’s Wall Street Journal says that the $38 BILLION in cuts that were agreed upon last week to keep the government from shutting down were actually more like $20 BILLION …once you account for some accounting scams.
That’s nearly 50% in accounting scams.
Nowhere in the private sector would we accept that kind of chicanery... continue reading »

Three Cheers for Budget Cuts
I got excited this week when I heard about Congressman Ryan’s “Roadmap to Prosperity.” $6 Trillion in cuts! Finally, Congress might address entitlement spending, and eventually get the budget balanced. His plan even got the liberal journalists at the NY Times to acknowledge that the current system is unsustainable... continue reading »

Joe Biden Railroad
It's amazing how modern politics resembles scenes of Ayn Rand's best-seller Atlas Shrugged. Like the one in which a high-ranking government official pumps millions of dollars into a failing railroad company. The grateful railroad CEO rewards the government official by renovating his hometown train station and naming it after the government official. The renovation costs $5,700,000 more than expected. Then comes the ribbon cutting ceremony... continue reading »

Crony Capitalism Again
I’ve reported on a remarkable little window company, Serious Materials. Somehow, that little company got personal endorsements from both President Obama and Vice President Biden. Biden appeared at the company and told them:You are making some of the most energy efficient windows in the world. I would argue THE most energy efficient windows in the world... continue reading »

Govt Suppresses Information
I’ve reported before on prediction markets – betting markets like Intrade.com where people bet on future events. Because bettors put their money where their mouths are, their predictions are very accurate. When researchers compare the track record of TV pundits versus professional pollsters versus the bettors on Intrade, Intrade's predictions have the best track record... continue reading »

Bill O’Reilly vs. Ron Paul
Why doesn’t Bill get it? On tonight’s show, he’s going to rant about federal spending. He wants cuts. Good. But then he wants to have me on so he can tell me why Ron Paul is wrong, and odd, and shouldn’t be running for President -- and Donald Trump is right. I don’t know where to begin. We hold elections because we don't know who's going to win. Ron Paul might win. Who thought Jimmy Carter could win? Or Barack Obama? A black, ultra-liberal, freshman Senator? Or Abe Lincoln? Lincoln was a dark horse... continue reading »

A Good Sign
I thank the Weekly Standard’s Fred Barnes for pointing out some good news that I’d missed. The new Chair of the House Energy and Commerce Committee recently said this to members of his committee:
We are in the middle of the largest fiscal crisis the country has ever faced... No one seriously thinks that we can continue on our current path of recklessness. And that path ends right here... ... continue reading »

This Week’s Column: My State of the Union Speech
President Obama’s State of the Union speech last night had some nice rhetoric about freezing spending. But not most spending—just 12% of the budget. What good is that? The president did at least acknowledge that America is in debt trouble that that in the future we must cut defense and entitlements, but he didn’t propose any such cuts. Most of his speech was about new things the government should do. Bad idea. So I gave my own speech about the real State of the Union... continue reading »

Get Out The Scissors -- It's Time to Start Cutting
We heard a lot of flowery, sweeping language last night in the State of the Union. Some grand visions were laid out. President Obama says Americans should get 80% of our electricity from clean energy sources by 2035. He says 80% of Americans should have access to high speed rail within the next 25 years. Why? Clean energy and high speed rail sound great. But our government can't produce such things as well as the free market, and shouldn't even be trying... continue reading »
