The New Rosa Parks?
Last month, an Ohio mom was sentenced to 10 days in jail because she sent her kids to a public school outside the district she lived in. Kelley Williams-Bolar lives in a part of Akron, Ohio that she feels is less safe that the neighborhood where her father lives. Also, his district is said to have better schools. So Kelley enrolled her daughters into schools in his neighborhood and told the district that they lived at her dad's address. And they do sometimes. They spend a lot of time with their grandfather... continue reading »

Close the Education Department!
This week’s release of the latest international education test comparisons makes me wonder why there aren’t more calls to kill off the U.S. Department of Education. Eight years ago, Bush signed the “No Child Left Behind Act,” which costs the government $25 billion a year. He promised that this would fix the K-12 education problem:
“We've spent billions of dollars with lousy results... continue reading »

Let Markets Civilize Airport Security
The government says it may fine one young man $11,000 for leaving the airport without “permission.” He didn’t want to be scanned by the invasive new scanners, and he didn’t want the TSA touching his “junk.” When they’re not touching your junk, the TSA makes children cry. Now Bill O’Reilly demands that I provide my “solution,” or endorse his. I admit, I don’t know the best solution... continue reading »

Web-Only Segment of Tonight's Show: Kids vs. Bureaucrats
My FBN show tonight talked about public education. Education in America is a mess, so we hear a lot about "reform." But an entrenched bureaucracy and militant unions fight the very reforms that would improve schools -- improve them for the kids, that is. The show re-airs tonight at midnight EST; Friday at 10pm EST; Saturday at 9pm and midnight EST; and Sunday at 10pm EST. Tonight’s Show: Kids vs Bureaucrats (FBN @9pm ET)
On tomorrow night’s show (FBN @ 9pm ET), it’s the Kids vs the Bureaucrats. Education in America is a mess, so we hear a lot about “reform.” But an entrenched bureaucracy and militant unions fight the very competition that would improve schools. Improve them for kids, that is. I’ll talk to Michelle Rhee, the head of the terrible DC public school system... continue reading »

Competition Breeds Success II
This morning, I got an e-mail that provides another example of how private schools tend to beat the government-union monopoly.
Dear John:
The annual state test results were just announced, and we have exciting news to share!... continue reading »

More Guns, Safer Schools?
On my show this week -- which re-airs tonight at 9 pm and midnight -- I asked whether more guns could, counter-intuitively, lead to less crime. But it is even more counter-intuitive for many to imagine more guns on college campuses would be a good thing. After all, I remember being an irresponsible college student. Who wants a drunken student carrying a gun? Only twelve colleges allow it. People FOX asked on the street said things like: "it's a horrible idea." ... "Way too dangerous." ... "Absolutely not... continue reading »

The Head Start Scam (II)
On my FBN show this week (which re-airs tonight at 10pm) I interviewed Greg Kutz, the director of Government Accountability Office's Special Investigations unit, about fraud he discovered in the government’s Energy Star certification program. Kutz's team managed to get the EPA’s seal of approval on things like a space heater with a feather duster taped on, and a gas powered alarm clock . Such exposes make the GAO my favorite government agency... continue reading »
