Stupid in America (Sunday at 9PM ET on FNC)
A blog post in the Washington Post criticizes states like Michigan and Tennessee for supporting the spread of charter schools, because that diverts money from the government schools:continue reading »

Putting Teachers' Unions Ahead of Kids
Obama's new budget is 1,470 pages long. On page 1,318, Obama announces he will end funding for the DC "Opportunity Scholarship" program, which gives poor kids the option of going to a private school instead of being stuck in the government monopoly. [HT: Fox News' Ed Henry]... continue reading »

Exciting Schools
America's government-managed schools are a mess. On international math tests, U.S. students rank behind countries like Hungary. It's one reason I called my special "Stupid in America." The bigger reason is that it is stupid to trust something important like education to a government monopoly.
But, as I write in the my syndicated column this week, there is good news:
Cool things are starting to happen in classrooms... continue reading »

Unions: Good for bad teachers, bad for kids
A just-retired public school principal writes me after my special:
You nailed the problems and issues in today's public education... with the current teacher unions, textbook companies, and especially teacher TENURE... teacher "tenure" is all but stopping 21st Century educational reform all over the United States... continue reading »

Charter Schools Don't Succeed?!
Here's a reaction to my special "Stupid in America," which aired this weekend:
Dear Mr. Stossel,
Do you understand how totally unsupported claims are? All the studies of charter show they do worse on average than public schools, with a few cherry-picked examples doing better but most doing worse... continue reading »

STUPID IN AMERICA (Sunday on FNC at 9pm EST)
School spending has gone through the roof and test scores are flat.
While most every other service in life has gotten faster, better, and cheaper, one of the most important things we buy -- education -- has remained completely stagnant, unchanged since we started measuring it in 1970.
Why no improvement?... continue reading »

School Competition Rescues Kids
Conventional wisdom says that government should run schools. This idea is intuitive. It is also wrong. The free market would do a much better job.
This week in my syndicated column, I compare the public school system to the cars produced by governments:... continue reading »

Charter School Burnout
The blob (the education establishment) likes to say that charter school teachers are more likely to burn out and leave the profession for good. One writer said,
"Teachers at charter schools often ‘burn out' due to the longer hours and higher levels of stress due to the higher standards they are held too ."... continue reading »

Stupid in America (New Show Tonight at 10pm on FBN)
Not everyone liked my education special "Stupid in America". I got angry emails, accusing me of "union bashing" and "teacher bashing".
Tonight on FBN, I'll revisit the subject. We'll show more of the exciting things happening in charter schools, where students told us "learning is fun" and reading is "rockin' awesome".

Is College Necessary?
People always talk about the importance of college. But for a lot of students, college is a scam.
In my syndicated column this week, I cover some of the reasons.
"There are 80,000 bartenders in the United States with bachelor's degrees," Economist Richard Vedder said. He says that 17 percent of baggage porters and bellhops have a college degree, 15 percent of taxi and limo drivers... continue reading »
