No Soup for You: the Government's War on Food
The nanny state strikes again, this time to regulate our diet. Over the last few months, a group of government agencies studied the link between advertising and childhood obesity.
They concluded that advertising contributes to the "epidemic" of childhood obesity. To solve the problem, they recommended that food companies stop advertising to kids.
Since the food industry is regulated by these agencies, ignoring the recommendations would be like ignoring your boss when he "recommends" that you do something.
But the ban is okay, says the government, because it promotes "public health."
There are some public health problems that the government should address: smallpox epidemics, for example.
Obesity is different. It is not a public health problem, it's a private one. And government regulations that seek to "make us healthier" infringe on personal liberty.
Lately, government has become more concerned with fake "epidemics" like obesity. Their solution to these private problems is always more government, and less freedom.
Give me a break and let me eat what I want.
