Battle of the Budgets Winner: The Heritage Foundation (Re-airs on Fox News at 10pm Saturday)

On my show last night, I pitted five think tanks against each other in a contest to see who had the best plan for getting our (currently unsustainable) budget under control.

The winner - the plan that most people in the audience voted for - was the Heritage Foundation. Maybe that's because it was the only think tank to submit a plan that actually balances the budget (the others all aimed for "sustainable deficits.") Still, as I noted in my syndicated column, I'm underwhelmed. This year, our government will spend an astounding $3.8 trillion. We need to rethink the mission of government-decide what it should and not do. That would lead to eliminating entire departments. That would be a good thing for economic growth. But none of the think tanks did that.
