This chart tells the story.  Our government has already spent thirteen trillion more dollars than it has taxes to cover. Tonight's show (FBN @ 9pm ET) is all about why we're bankrupting America and what we can do about it.

The future looks ugly. The deficit spending is unsustainable. At the rate government spends and makes promises, government will soon consume... everything.

Most Americans agree that government spending is a problem but ... they don't want to cut anything significant.  No cuts to Social Security. Or Medicare. Or the Military. Many have no clue that those programs are most of the budget. And if voters don't have the guts to make these cuts, the politicians sure won't.

So, where do we start? What should we cut? I'll lay out my suggestions on tonight's show, but check out the cuts offered by these think tanks from all over the political spectrum.

Third Way has some ideas that I like, including this proposal for a “taxpayer's receipt” that lets you see how much of your money goes where.

The Heritage Foundation suggests hard spending caps on Congress.

The Center for American Progress identified $255 Billion in cuts, and I'd take them all, although all their cuts won’t be enough.

The Cato Institute offers more cuts. They’ve identified nearly $500 Billion in cuts at downsizinggovernment.org and they are only halfway through the budget.

This month's issue of Reason magazine has a good summary of budget-cut ideas (partly in 3D, if you like that sort of thing).

Tonight we’ll discuss possible cuts, and I’ll fight with some pro-union folks, who say that public sector unions are wonderful .

    This Week's Show -- May 16, 2013

Government is at war against the little guy.

Bureaucrats pass thousands of regulations to "keep people safer" and "make the marketplace more fair." Today 170,000 pages of federal regulations are on the books. Break just one rule, and government may wreck your life.

So Wisconsin Senator Ron Johnson started a "Victims of Government" website that features victims of overregulation.

Nevada bureaucrats tell people who teach movie make-up that they must get an expensive license or close.

Stossel has two empty rooms in his house now that his kids moved out. Using sites like Roomorama, he could make a little money and rent the rooms out. But two years ago, New York passed a law that makes most of what apartment rental sites do illegal. Stossel debates Liz Kreuger, who sponsored that bill.

Is there any hope for the little guy? Authors of "Madmen, Intellectuals, and Academic Scribblers", Edward Lopez and Wayne Leighton, point out that deregulation did happen once. Americans pay much less to fly and to ship something because the CAB and ICC no longer exist. And we have cell phones because the FCC finally allowed spectrum auction. They say the only time things change is when the right people, the right ideas and the right circumstances all come together to repeal the bureaucrats rules.
