• Here Come the Bribes

I’ve reported that majority leader Harry Reid and other senators have adjusted the health care bill to exempt their states from all sorts of new taxes.

Now comes Brian Faler with a report on how Senate Democrats added goodies to their $829 billion health care bill to win certain states’ and special interests’ support.

      Neal Boortz calls it “bribery.”

(I)n order to get this thing passed, Democrats are not beyond bribery. Essentially, yes, that is what we are seeing. Democrats in Washington are including perks or exemptions for certain states in order to gain Senate votes from those states.

Faler writes that the gravy train starts in Nevada, Reid’s home state.

Nevada would get help with its Medicaid bills. The elderly in Florida and New York would receive additional Medicare benefits. And workers in so-called high-risk professions such as firefighting and construction would get a break on a new insurance tax.

Of course, everyone else must pay more so the politically-connected can get their special deals. Sen. John McCain protested:

“We cut special favors for special states, not based on need or requirements but on the influence of the individual senator,” said Arizona Republican John McCain.

Reid responded: “I make absolutely no apologies -- none - - for helping people in my state.”

And that’s what it’s come to. The powerful have always delivered pork to their districts in order to buy votes. But at least they made some pretense that the allocation was for a good cause.

Now we don’t even get an apology.
