New Explosions In Brussels Paralyze Metro System

A central Brussels Metro station was hit by an explosion Tuesday morning, according to media reports, following two deadly explosions at the city's airport earlier in the day. According to Belgian media reports, the Maalbeek Metro station in central Brussels close to the European Union buildings was hit by a bomb, prompting an evacuation of the station. Brussels's transport authority said it has closed down all Metro stations in the Belgian capital after the Maalbeek explosion. The blast follows two explosions at the Zaventem Airport in Brussels shortly before 8 a.m. local time, or 3 a.m. Eastern Time. Reports said several people are dead and wounded after the airport attack. Brussels Airport said all operations have been suspended until further notice and told people to avoid the airport area. Belgium raised the terror alert to level 4 -- the highest level -- according to media reports.
