How the Dow Jones industrial average and other major indexes fared on Wednesday

U.S. stocks closed lower on Wednesday as investors got mixed signals from the Federal Reserve over the possibility of an interest rate hike in September. Energy stocks fell as the price of oil plummeted.

For the day:

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 162.61 points, or 0.9 percent, to 17,348.73.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index lost 17.31 points, or 0.8 percent, to 2,079.61.

The Nasdaq composite dropped 40.30 points, or 0.8 percent, to 5,019.05.

The Dow is down 128.67 points, or 0.7 percent.

The S&P 500 index is down 11.93 points, or 0.6 percent.

The Nasdaq is down 29.18 points, or 0.6 percent.

For the year:

The Dow is down 474.34 points, or 2.7 percent.

The S&P 500 index is up 20.71 points, or 1 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 283.00 points, or 6 percent.
