U.S. stocks rose Friday as China's currency stabilized and crude oil prices steadied after falling to a six-year low.

Nordstrom and J.C. Penney climbed after both retailers reported better-than-expected earnings.

For the day:

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 69.15 points, or 0.4 percent, to 17,477.40.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index gained 8.15 points, or 0.4 percent, to 2,091.54.

The Nasdaq composite climbed 14.68 points, or 0.3 percent, to 5,048.24.

The Dow is up 104.02 points, or 0.6 percent.

The S&P 500 index is up 13.97 points, or 0.7 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 4.69 points, or 0.1 percent.

For the year:

The Dow is down 345.67 points, or 1.9 percent.

The S&P 500 index is up 32.64 points, or 1.6 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 312.18 points, or 6.6 percent.
