How the Dow Jones industrial average and other major indexes fared Thursday

Good news on U.S. retail sales lifted the stock market Thursday, although worries about the latest plunge in oil prices kept the gains in check.

On Thursday:

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 63.19 points, or 0.4 percent, to 17,596.34.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 9.19 points, or 0.5 percent, to 2,035.33.

The Nasdaq composite added 24.14 points, or 0.5 percent, to 4,708.16

For the week:

The Dow is down 362.45 points, or 2 percent.

The S&P 500 is down 40.04 points, or 1.9 percent.

The Nasdaq is down 72.59 points, or 1.5 percent.

For the year:

The Dow is up 1,019.68 points, or 6.2 percent.

The S&P 500 index is up 186.97 points, or 10.1 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 531.57 points, or 12.7 percent.
