Environmental group asks for court review of California nuclear plant license

An environmental group wants a federal court to review its claim that California's last operating nuclear power plant is violating federal law and should be ordered to shut down.

Friends of the Earth says in documents filed Tuesday that the Nuclear Regulatory Commission broke its own regulations when it altered the operating license for the Diablo Canyon reactors without a proper review.

A petition filed with the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia comes as the latest development in a dispute over potential danger posed by nearby earthquake faults.

The NRC and owner Pacific Gas and Electric Co. have long said the plant located between Los Angeles and San Francisco is safe and in compliance with regulations.

The NRC says it will review the filing.
