Frontier Airlines announces expansion of Cincinnati-Northern Kentucky airport service

Low-fare carrier Frontier Airlines announced Thursday it is doubling its service from the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport.

Frontier will begin daily flights to Dallas-Fort Worth on Oct. 26, with multiday service also coming to Las Vegas; Phoenix; and Orlando and Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

The five new destinations give Frontier 10 from the airport in northern Kentucky. Frontier began flying out of the airport in 2013, bringing a low-cost alternative to an airport long known for high fares.

The new service will operate on a 138-seat A319 aircraft. Frontier kicked off the new offerings Thursday with limited, temporary fares as low as $14.99 one way.

"We are confident customers will love our amazing low fares and the ability to optimize their travel experience for the comfort and value they seek," Frontier President Barry Biffle said in a statement.

Passengers on Frontier can choose no-frills economy fares that carry add-ons such as for seat selection and checked bags.

Frontier earlier announced plans to begin service from northern Kentucky to Washington D.C. starting Sept. 8.

Airport CEO Candace McGraw noted that just 18 months after beginning service at the airport with a flight to Denver, Frontier will soon offer 41 flights per week to 10 destinations.

Frontier's expansion also is good news for regional business leaders, who have been concerned about reduced air transportation locally after Delta Air Lines cutbacks and the shutdown of Delta's former regional carrier, Comair.

"It's a substantial announcement," Matt Davis, senior vice president of the Cincinnati USA Regional Chamber, told The Cincinnati Enquirer. "CVG continues to be a significant economic driver for our area, and this will only enhance that. A strong airport means a healthy region, and expanding their flight options will only further enrich the chamber and our partners' ability to continue accelerating business growth."

Low-fare rival Allegiant Air has also been expanding service from the airport.
