Rep. Kevin McCarthy of California was elected majority leader by his fellow House Republicans on Thursday. McCarthy succeeds Rep. Eric Cantor as the House's No. 2 Republican following Cantor's unexpected loss in his June 10 primary. As majority leader, the 49-year-old McCarthy will be in charge of managing the House's schedule and coordinating with House committee chairmen. Rep. Raul Labrador, a conservative from Idaho, challenged McCarthy but was considered a long shot.
