Energy Sector Wrap

The Energy sector (XLE) showed little movement on a trading day that saw S&P 500 fall 0.8%.

The ETF, as a proxy for the sector, tracked closer to the overall market today than over the past month. Entering today's trading, XLE was up 6.7% over the last thirty trading days while the S&P 500 climbed 5%.

Cubic Energy (QBC) was a major gainer in the sector, rising 14.9% (+4 cents) to close at 31 cents with 276,975 shares moving. The stock traded in a range of 27 cents to 33 cents. The stock has been slipping in the last two months, down 11 cents (-26.2%) from a price of 42 cents on June 26, 2012.

Advantage Oil & Gas (AAV) rose 13.1% to close at $3.71, cross its 50-day moving average of $3.39 and 200-day moving average of $3.31. Southwestern Energy (SWN) declined 5.8% to close at $30.95, moving below its 50-day moving average of $31.90 and 200-day moving average of $31.01.

Approach Resources (PXP) fell 4.2% to close at $27.73, moving closer to its 50-day moving average of $27.48. Also, the stock moved closer to its 200-day moving average of $39.17.

Bill Barrett Corporation (BBG) was a major loser in the sector. Its price dropped 6.5% (-$1.51) to close at $21.89, as 1.4 million shares moved. The stock traded in a range of $21.80 to $23.47. The stock has been on an upward trajectory over the last two months, rising $4.04 (22.6%) from a price of $17.85 on June 26, 2012.
